Duties of a Forklift Operator
The most common area for forklift operators to be employed are in warehouses and factories. Their tasks would comprise the lifting and transporting of materials and goods from one place to another. They should be trained to safely operate the forklift controls. Specialized training is a requirement. Drivers should pass a drug test and have a background check.
Performing Checks
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all forklift drivers carry out a daily pre-shift forklift check. Forklift operator training must consist of the correct performance of safety inspections to assure optimum functionality. An inspection must also be done at the end of every shift. Regular safety training must be undertaken every year.
Loading and Unloading
The forklift operator is tasked with the job of loading and unloading supplies in a timely and safe way. This job also involves the stacking of goods in an organized way so they are accessible.
Weighing Materials
The duties of a forklift operator can include weighing the supplies which are being transported and recording the weights.
Quality Control
Forklift operators are in charge of quality control. They need to make sure orders are accurate and that goods do not sustain damage during transportation inside the warehouse.
Safety Awareness
A responsible forklift driver should have exceptional skills in awareness and attention to safety. Operators must exhibit a high level of concern for the safety of employees and pedestrians. The operator should find the safest way to handle challenges, such as navigating a steep surface with a cargo. The driver must determine the safest route to take. An operator's training would involve learning about the elements that can cause a forklift to tip over. The operator should be extremely familiar with the design and safety ratings of the forklift unit which they are operating. A forklift driver has to be sensitive to the need for breaks to prevent fatigue. Forklift mishaps are more likely to happen when an operator is exhausted.

Forklift Engines
Forklifts are classified as vehicles with small engines, the same category in which lawnmowers are classed. The engines of the forklifts all follow the principles of internal combustion. Various forklift models and brand names would have varying engine layout and design. Forklifts are designed more toward producing high torque rather than for speed. They usually are geared to low speeds. The engine powers the drive wheels of the forklift. The engine is also needed to lift and lower the forks through a series of chain pulleys. The majority of forklift engines that are modern are fueled by propane since they will be used indoors, where gasoline and diesel engines will be unsuitable due to the exhaust they make.
Normally, the forklift is a four-cylinder engine-block. The engines of the forklift are similar to car engines as they hold pistons connecting to a camshaft. Each and every cylinder head consists of an intake hatch, an exhaust hatch and a spark plug, each of them spring-loaded and one-way.
Engine Function
Propane passes through the opened throttle-plate in a fine spray, when the driver starts up the forklift engine. This fine spray mixes together with air coming from the mass air intake prior to moving into the head intake hatches of the cylinder. Every one of the four pistons is staggered to rise in an exact sequence, compressing the air and propane mixture as every piston rises to the top of the head. With timing that is really precise, the alternator and battery of the engine generate an electrical current which passes through the spark plug. The fuel ignites causing an explosion that drives the piston back down to the bottom of the cylinder, causing a continuous turning of the camshaft. In the cylinder, an air pressure imbalance causes the the exhaust hatch to draw out exhaust as more fuel passes into the cylinder. Propane burns a lot cleaner compared to gasoline and diesel and the exhaust is not as harmful.
